Multi-instrumentalist
John's love of folk music owes much to going to a school that offered free guitar lessons
and a folk club which provided opportunities for students to try out songs and tunes emerging
from the folk revival of the late 60’s.
John’s first group was a skiffle group called the Whitehorse Wombats,
a clue to both their location and favourite comedy program at the time.
The group were famously featured in the Ladybird book of Scouts.
Lancaster University Folk Club provided exposure to ground-breaking folk groups including Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and Planxty. Whilst living in Liverpool, John formed a group which enjoyed a residency in a wine bar in Chester with a repertoire of Irish, Scots and American tunes and songs.
John’s fascination with the sounds of different instruments has resulted in a room full of instruments ranging from the familiar to the unusual. He strongly believes that Ceilidh dancing can be one of the best guarantees of happiness and was delighted to be invited to join The Angels of the North in 2017. John particularly enjoys having the chance to contribute the sounds of guitar, tenor banjo, mandolin, bouzouki, mouthorgan and 5-string banjo.
